Take time to explore Port Townsend on Washington’s peninsula while waiting for the ferry to Whidbey Island. With a variety of shops, restaurants, and quaint old buildings this historical town is the perfect point of transition to the carved-out coastal communities at the edges of the wilderness and gateway to the wonders of mountain domains in the Pacific Northwest.

Grab a frisbee and launch it across a vast, grassy field along the beachside at Fort Casey while on Whidbey Island, hunt for shells and driftwood while the waves drag across pebbles and sand along the shore. Hike to the lighthouse and explore the deep, underground bunkers between the large WWII cannons of the old fortress.

Another historical point of reference for the traveler, is the tiny seaside town of Coupeville which boasts of both Native American roots along with the historic settlement of immigrants from many world locations. Chuckanut Drive to Highway 20- As the tour bus makes its way to the mountains, enjoy the expansive scenery and incredible views as you travel along this high coastal highway. The narrow roadway sandwiched between craggy cliffs and the rise of sheer rock hillsides will reveal glimpses of the ocean below.
